If you\u2019re in the thick of it \u2014 or supporting someone who is \u2014 you may feel stuck, ashamed, or simply burned out. As a therapist who specializes in treating eating disorders, I want to offer both compassion and clarity: the difficulty with motivation is not a moral failing. It\u2019s a deeply human response to a condition structured around control, identity, and fear. And working with a therapist who really <em data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"805\">gets<\/em> eating disorders can make a huge difference.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a9582b3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4a9582b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why recovery motivation is so hard<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a5907cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5a5907cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5 data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"920\">1. Shame runs deep<\/h5><ul data-start=\"921\" data-end=\"1452\"><li data-start=\"921\" data-end=\"1157\"><p data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1157\">Shame is highly associated with eating disorder symptoms. Self-compassion feels risky<\/h5><ul data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"2360\"><li data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1750\"><p data-start=\"1493\" data-end=\"1750\">For many people with eating disorders, self-compassion is difficult to access. Motivation is embedded in how you feel about yourself, how others treat you, and how safe you feel allowing yourself to change.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h5 data-start=\"3144\" data-end=\"3183\">4. Deep-rooted fears and identity<\/h5><ul data-start=\"3184\" data-end=\"3799\"><li data-start=\"3184\" data-end=\"3380\"><p data-start=\"3186\" data-end=\"3380\">Eating disorders are often tangled up with identity. You may fear that if the disorder goes, you\u2019ll lose <em data-start=\"3291\" data-end=\"3297\">part<\/em> of yourself (the control, the coping strategy, even a distorted \u201ccomfort zone\u201d).<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3381\" data-end=\"3652\"><p data-start=\"3383\" data-end=\"3652\">There may also be trauma, perfectionism, or self-criticism underneath.
